In 2008, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) was created with a hope to honor and safely house information, stories, and the truth about life in residential schools for future generations. Constituted and created by the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, the TRC spent 6 years traveling across Canada. They did research, collected data, and recorded the stories of over 6,000 people whose lives were affected by residential schools. The TRC was able to create a historical repository, consisting of over 5 million records, that will be preserved at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) at the University of Manitoba. In 2015, the TRC published its final report; however, reconciliation, commemoration and public education will be an ongoing process for years to come.
