Student Library Assistant Resource Guide

Duties

Opening:

  • Ensure door opened or unlocked (dependent on weather), at the top of the door (black panel), move the switch on the right all the way down (pointing to ‘open’ if door is open or to “auto” if door is closed)
  • Turn library and computer lab lights on
  • Let students in the hall know they can enter the library
  • Turn on the circulation computer. Cheat sheet with passwords is in the circ desk drawer, bottom left (it’s laminated). Use that to log into Workflows, email, Desktracker, Papercut, LibCal for study rooms, Student Library Assistant Resource Guide, etc., (use ‘circ’ folder, right click to open five needed). Open Outlook email to see room report.
  • Grab Globe and Mail newspaper from hallway, unwrap and put on shelf. Remove oldest newspaper (three on shelf at a time) and recycle
  • Grab Comox Valley Record (if still outside), place 3 on newspaper rack, 1 for Leah’s desk, rest can go into hallway (just before bathrooms), recycle old ones
  • Turn hallway light in front of bathroom if it’s not already on
  • 8:00 am start record gate count in binder
  • Put cashbox in desk drawer

Closing

  • Fifteen minutes prior to closing, do a walk around the library. Push chairs in, tidy and take a headcount, record on desktop spreadsheet
  • Ten minutes prior to closing, turn the ‘open’ sign around and let patrons know the library closes in ten minutes
  • Check the book drop a final time, and do any last shelving
  • Five minutes prior to closing, close or lock front door, leave the switch on the right at ‘Auto’
  • Put the cashbox away in the middle drawer on the right under the printer
  • Do a final walk around the library, ensure everyone is out, tidy up after them as needed
  • Put apples in fridge
  • Turn off bathroom and kitchen lights
  • Double check door alarm in panel by Lynette’s office
  • Shut down circulation computer
  • 4:00 pm finish record gate count in binder
