Faculty: General Library Services

 

As a member of North Island College's faculty, you have access to a number of services and resources through the NIC Library.

Contact the Library at the campus nearest you for more information. 

Your Employee Photo ID card serves as your library card. Student Services will provide you with your Employee Photo ID card. Please present this card to sign out materials.

Log in to My Account to find out when your books are due, to renew materials or check your fines.

*Book may not be renewed if a hold has been placed on it.

Booking NIC Media Online

  1. Go to the library homepage at https://library.nic.bc.ca/. Click on the 'Books and Media' tab and search for the title you want.
  2. Click on the title of the video to open the detailed record.
  3. Select the 'Faculty Video Bookings' button at the top of the page.
  4. Select 'Book this video'.
  5. Fill in the required information on the request form.
  6. You may pick up your media item at the Lending Services desk at the Library & Learning Commons.

Booking Media via Interlibrary Loan

If you'd like to request a video or DVD, you can search academic and public libraries across the province using BC Outlook Online. There are no renewals for videos borrowed via Interlibrary Loan. For optimum availability, book early (at least one month in advance of the show date). Advertising off campus, invitation to the general public and entry fees are not permitted. To get started, select the link below that corresponds with your campus:

Limit your search by selecting "ELN med cat" in the Search Targets dropdown (the symbol looks like several stacked discs).

From the result list, open the record of the media item by clicking on the title.

Fill out a Video Request Form online.

 

Books, articles, and media can be borrowed from other BC libraries. To order an item from another institution, follow the steps below:

1. Find What you Need

Choose the material type:

  • Magazine or Journal ArticleIf you wish to request a magazine or journal article, you can place your request online by using the "Where Can I Get This?" link, in the article database. For a list of available databases, visit A-Z Databases.
  • BooksTo place an interlibrary loan request for books from other BC Libraries click one of the following links 
    • For Comox Valley  click here
    • For Campbell River  click here
    • For Port Alberni click here
    • For Mixalakwila click here

2. Search for Your Item

  • These links will bring you to BC Outlook Online, which searches academic and public libraries across BC. You can search for books in the search bar at the top of the screen.
  • Once you've found a book you'd like to request you can click on the "Request this Item" button, which brings up the ILL Request form.
  • Fill out the form, ensuring that the correct pickup location displays and click submit. If the incorrect location is selected, it will take 2-3 extra days to transfer the item to the correct library. 
  • Requests for Interlibrary Loans are normally filled within 10 working days. As soon as your book arrives you will be notified using your NIC or ECU e-mail address. Books can be picked up and returned at the circulation desk.

Suggesting Items for the General Collection

If there is a book, periodical, media item, or other material you would like to see added to the collection, please submit the following form to Lynette Gallant, Public Services Librarian:

Adding Items to Reserve Collection

Library owned books and instructor copies may be placed on Library Reserve for students. Reserve loan periods are determined by the instructor.

For copies of student essays, a signed Permission to Copy Unpublished and/or Student Work form is required. Please contact the library to request this form.

To place an item on Reserve, submit the item together with a completed Reserve Form to the Lending Services desk. Please allow 2 weeks for processing.
