Google Scholar: How to Search

How to Search Using Google Scholar - Tips & Tricks

  • Use "quotation marks" to search for a phrase, for example: "history of nursing" retrieves articles with all of those words together, in that order
  • Use "OR" to search for alternate search terms, for example: tornado cyclone retrieves articles with either search term in the text
  • Use the "-" sign to exclude a word from a search, for example: nursing -elderly retrieves articles about nursing that do not contain the word elderly
  • Use "author:" and the author's name to search for articles written by a particular person, for example: nursing author:benner retrieves articles about nursing written by Benner
  • Use "intitle:" and to search the document title rather than the full text of the article, for example: nursing intitle:family retrieves articles about nursing with the word family in the title
  • Use the "+" sign to include common words that Google generally ignores or to make sure that word is included in all of your results, for example: +the big apple retrieves articles that all have the word the in the results (usually Google Scholar would ignore it)
  • You can also use operators (symbols or connecting words) in the main Google Scholar search box to fine tune your searches
