Basic Guide for Web Accessibility

This guide distills the WCAG 2.2 requirements into basic forms and how to apply it to LibGuides and web content.

Non-Interference

While there are the 3 levels of standards to consider (A/AA/AAA), there are 4 standards that set the minimum of what is called "non-interference". If, for whatever reason, you cannot apply the A levels to your site/LibGuide, adhering to these 4 standards will ensure that your site's users will not have their visit interrupted.

The 4 non-interference standards are explained below.

1.4.2 - Audio Control

1.4.2 Audio Control

This standard means that webpages/LibGuides should not have or link to video or audio that loads their media immediately and it runs for more than 3 seconds.

If this media runs for more than 3 seconds, the user should be able to:

  • turn it off;
  • turn it down;
  • pause the media.

2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap

2.1.2 No Keyboard Trap

If a user is using a keyboard to navigate into a page and through the page, there must not be anything that prevents the user from continuing to use the keyboard to exit the page or section.

2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide

2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide

Information that moves, blinks or scrolls can be paused/slowed/stopped by the user to ensure that they can follow the information.

Any auto-updates can also be paused or hidden by the user.

2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold

2.3.1 Three Flashes or Below Threshold

Any media on a website, in a LibGuide or in a link, should not flash more than 3 times in a 1 second period.

If there are any flashing media, the user must be able to turn off or pause the media.
