Basic Guide for Web Accessibility

This guide distills the WCAG 2.2 requirements into basic forms and how to apply it to LibGuides and web content.

Organization

When drafting your ideas for webpages, social media, images, etc., it can be helpful to look at these criteria to ensure that your draft/design can reach all people.

 

There are exceptions for many rules depending on the circumstances, but reading through the linked "Understanding Success Criterion XXX" can help with these issues.

Success Criteria A Levels

____ Content/contrast cannot be solely defined by color. (1.4.1)

____ Titles clearly present the information that will follow. (2.4.2)

____ Text that is hyperlinked should clearly indicate what the link is for. (2.4.4)

____ Contact details should be either linked or present on each page. (3.2.6)

Success Criteria AA Levels

____ Text contrast should be 4.5:1 from the background; large text must be 3:1. (1.4.3)

____ Text can be resized 200% without assistive technology with no loss of meaning and operation (1.4.4)

____ Users should be able to get to different parts of a website/page easily and through more than one link. (2.4.5)

____ Provide clear headings and labels on the webpage. (2.4.6)

Success Criteria AAA Levels

____ Text contrast to the background must be 7:1; 4.5:1 for large text. (1.4.6)

____ For blocks of text, the foreground and background colors can be changed; line widths are <80 characters; alignment is not justified; line spacing is 1.5 within paragraphs and 2 between paragraphs; text sizes can change 200% without needing horizontal scrolling. (1.4.8)

____ Add section headings to the information given and be understood without problems. (2.4.10)

____ Content is designed and phrased so that words in specific contexts are explained within the text, including any cliches, idioms and terminology. (3.1.3)

____ Abbreviations are defined within the context, or with a glossary or drop-down text option. (3.1.4)

____ Text that has reading level higher than 9th grade, provides additional content or a version that is on the 9th reading level. (3.1.5)

____ Pronunciation help is provided if the context does not help the user understand the proper meaning. (3.1.6)
