Information for Community Borrowers

Community Borrowers at NIC

Community Borrowers are members of North Island College regional communities who want to pursue educational interests but who are not NIC students, staff, or faculty.

Who can become a Community Borrower?

Any resident of the North Island College region may apply to become a Community Borrower if:

  • they have photo ID with proof of address;
  • they are at least 16 years of age, or under 16 with a valid Grade 10 student card.

The North Island College region is identified as the area covered by School Districts #70, #71, #72, and #85.

Other residents outside the designated NIC region can borrow materials via interlibrary loan through their local public libraries.

How to apply for a Community Borrower card

To apply for a Community Borrower card, please bring your identification to any NIC library service desk during weekday daytime hours (Monday-Friday 8am-4pm). Community Borrower cards are issued for one year and can be renewed in-person annually. Community Borrowers must remain in good standing to renew membership and must present their Community Borrower card to borrow or access library resources.

Good standing

A Community Borrower who has a current Community Borrower card, who has an updated record, and who adheres to NIC policy, practices, and conditions as outlined in the Community Borrower Agreement.

Community Borrower privileges include:

  • access to NIC library during weekday daytime hours (Monday-Friday 8am-4pm);
  • borrowing print books (see Borrowing Privileges, Loan Periods, & Fines);
  • on-campus access to e-books;
  • access to library catalogue;
  • borrowing media (i.e., DVDs);
  • limited access to on-campus electronic databases and journals (where permissions/licenses allow).

Community Borrowing privileges do not include:

  • off-campus access to electronic resources (i.e., databases, journals, or e-books);
  • reserve items;
  • equipment loans;
  • interlibrary loans;
  • college WiFi.

How to borrow materials

Simply present your Community Borrower card, along with the items you wish to borrow, at the library service desk.

Community Borrowers may borrow up to five items at a time. Loan periods are two weeks, with a maximum of two renewals.

How to renew materials

Books and media (i.e., DVDs) can be renewed in-person at the library, over the phone, or online.

To renew online, log into My Account by entering your Community Borrower number and PIN in the top right corner of the NIC Library & Learning Commons homepage. Once logged in, you can view your due dates, renew items, and view any fines you may have. For complete information, see View My Library Account.
