Student Library Assistant Resource Guide

Emergency Preparedness

In the event of an emergency, there are several steps you may need to take. Exact procedures will vary on the type of emergency at hand.

In the event of severe weather or a natural disaster, you will be informed by your supervisor of the situation. In the event of a fire, all library staff and patrons will proceed to the nearest exit as indicated by posted fire escape plans.

In the event that a dangerous person enters the library, your first step must be to ensure that you are safe. This can include:

  • hiding under your desk
  • proceeding to the nearest exit if it is safe to do so

Each library has a panic button and  your supervisor will show you the exact location. Pressing the panic button will send an alert to the local RCMP who will then come to the library to check the situation.

If you are able to safely leave the library, call 9-1-1 immediately once you are outside and safe.

If any library patron or staff member has a medical emergency, dial 9-1-1 immediately and then notify your supervisor. You are not expected to perform any medical procedures that you are not comfortable performing (eg. you may administer CPR if you are CPR certified, but you are not expected to). If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call your campus' first aid line, or call 9-1-1 if your injury is severe.
