MLA Style Guide 9th Edition

Introduction

When creating a reference for items (i.e., poem, short story, journal article, play, book chapter, etc.) included in a course pack purchased from the campus bookstore, follow the example that is described below.

However, MLA recommends that students check with the instructor to make sure that this is their preferred method. For more information, please visit How should material from a course pack be cited? at the MLA Style Center.

Referencing Course packs

TEMPLATE:

Last, First. "Title of Work." Course pack for Course Code: Course Title, compiled by Instructor Name, Semester Year, College or University Name.

EXAMPLE:

Govier, Katherine. "The King of Siam." Course pack for ENG213: An Introduction to Canadian Literature, compiled by Heather Marchand, Winter 2023, North Island College.

There are different ways to format an in-text citation, depending on your writing style and sentence structure. Every in-text citation must include the author's name and page number. Formatting examples are outlined below:

In-text Citation Guidelines

Examples

Include the author's last name and page number placed in brackets at the end of a sentence.

Consider this a paraphrased sentence (Govier 45).

Include the author's name as part of the sentence; include the page number in brackets. The first time the author is mentioned in text use their full name (excluding middle initials), and use their last name only after that.

As written by Katherine Govier, "consider this a direct quote" (45). Govier goes on to describe that this is a paraphrased sentence (46).

Remember, in-text citation formatting may change depending on a number of factors.
