Book Repairs

Minor book repairs can be done locally.  These include mending torn pages, re-inserting loose pages, and repairing broken hinges.  More extensive damage should be sent to the Collections Librarian for assessment, as the book may need to be discarded and/or replaced.

  • Sign book out to ‘Repair’.

  • Torn pages should be mended with Scotch Brand Magic Tape ONLY, which is acid-free and will not yellow.

  • Pencil marks can be erased using a pink pearl eraser.

  • Ink, highlighting, water or other such damage that cannot be removed should be noted in small print on the inside of the front cover and dated.

  • Loose jackets with covers can be reattached using narrow filament tape. Carefully remove old tape first.

  • Loose pages can be reinserted using Radiant Bond, which is carefully applied to the binding edge of the loose page.  It is then inserted making sure the outer edges of the page are in line with the other pages.

  • Remember to check book back in before re-shelving.
