NIC Library Manual

Borrower Types

The Centre for Accessible Post-secondary Education Resources of British Columbia (CAPER-BC) provides accessible learning and teaching materials to students and instructors who cannot use conventional print because of disabilities.  Applicants work with NIC’s Department of Accessible Learning Services (DALS) counselor, and borrowing of CAPER materials is facilitated directly through DALS. Refer any questions or students who may benefit from the program to DALS.

All residents of the college region may register as Community Borrowers if:

  • They have Photo ID and proof of address

  • They are at least 16 years of age, or under 16 but with a valid Grade 10 Student Card. Users who do not meet the age requirement must have all materials checked out by an individual holding a valid NIC Library Card.

The college region is identified as the area covered by School Districts #70, 71, 72 & 85:

  • School District #70 – Port Alberni, Ucluelet, Tofino, & Bamfield. Postal Codes: V0R,V9Y

  • School District #71 – Comox, Cumberland, Courtenay, Miracle Beach, Denman Island, Hornby Island & Royston. Postal Codes: V0R, V9M, V9J, V9N

Other residents residing outside the designated College Region (as determined by the four school districts) must borrow NIC materials by interlibrary loan through their local public libraries.

To register a Community Borrower, see User Registration

For Community Borrowers who still qualify and whose card has expired, or is soon due to expire, extend their privileges.  See Renewing Accounts

Community Borrowers are required to read, sign and date the Computer and Internet Use Agreement Form for Community Users upon registering or renewing their membership.

Elder College members stay in WorkFlows for 1 year once registered.

Limited library privileges* are granted to Elder College members, see Appendix A: Circulation Privileges chart for details.  Elder College membership includes full access to the student computers, Interlibrary Loans and on-campus access to databases, including e-books.

Please note that Elder College students are not able to borrow laptop computers at this time.

Alumni and NIC students who are returning in the fall but want to use NIC library in the interim must use Community Borrower accounts. If the student record is still available in workflows do not create new Community Borrower accounts, instead modify their existing record using the User ID Manager wizard.  See Duplicate User
