NIC Library Manual

Subscriptions – Journals and Magazines

As journals are received they should be tracked at your campus (check your campus’s Local Practices). Any missing issues, after a reasonable waiting period, should be reported for claiming to the Acquisitions Library Assistant in CV. Usually if you have received issue #7 but haven’t received issue #6 then you know to report it.  However, if the serial is a weekly magazine it is a good idea to wait for at least 2 weeks before claiming.

The tracking system should be checked monthly to make sure that we are receiving issues of all currently subscribed serials. Check with the Acquisitions Library Assistant in CV to see if a subscription has been cancelled.

Journals should be property stamped and security stripped before placing on the shelf.  Use a ‘Received’ stamp with the name of the library and the date received on the cover or inside page.  See Periodicals and Reference for instructions on how to circulate Journals and Magazines.

There are 3 journal subscription renewal periods per year.  A list of journals that are expiring will be sent out to campus libraries twice a year.  Check through the list and decide if you would like to renew the subscriptions, or if they should be cancelled. Return the lists to the Acquisitions Library Assistant in CV along with any requests for new subscriptions.

When you receive the first issue of a new subscription, let the cataloguers in Library Tech Services know so that they can produce a catalogue entry for it.

When a subscription is cancelled let Tech Services know so that they can delete/adjust the catalogue entry for it.
