NIC Emergency Lockdown Procedures

A lockdown of a campus or individual building is an emergency procedure intended to secure and protect occupants who are in the proximity of an immediate threat. This procedure is used when it may be more dangerous to evacuate a building than stay inside. By controlling entry/exit and movement within a facility, emergency personnel are better able to contain and handle any threats

Lockdown Procedures

Notification of a campus lockdown may be announced via the PA system, emergency personnel or an administrator.

Upon Lockdown Announcement:

  • If you are in a classroom, room or office, stay there and lock the doors or barricade with furniture if doors do not lock.
  • Close window curtains or blinds where possible.
  • Shut off all lights and make room appear uninhabited.
  • If you are in a hallway or open space, go into the closest office or room not already secured and lock or barricade the door and windows.
  • Stay away from windows and doors and stay low and quiet.
  • Cell phones should be put on silent. Do NOT make non-essential calls.
  • Ignore any fire alarm bells, unless advised to do so from emergency personnel.
  • Follow instructions from police at all times to avoid harm and ensure the best possible response.
  • All exterior doors remain as they are at the time of a lockdown. No one is designated to lock/unlock them - all persons must secure themselves in a shelter area.
  • Staff and students outside the campus during a lockdown SHOULD NOT ENTER THE BUILDING. Move as far away as possible from the building under lockdown and await instructions from Police.

Actions to Avoid:

  • Do NOT open the door once it has been secured until you are officially advised "all clear" or are certain it is emergency responders at the door.
  • Do NOT use or hide in washrooms.
  • Do NOT travel down long corridors or assemble in large open areas.
  • Do NOT call 911 unless you have immediate concern for your safety, the safety of others, or feel you have critical information that will assist emergency personnel in the response.

Following the Lockdown:

  • Cooperate with emergency personnel to assist in an orderly evacuation and proceed to designated assembly area if advised.
  • The police may require individuals to remain available for questioning following a lockdown.
  • College staff may be present as you exit the building to provide additional information.

Campbell River has two panic buttons on lanyards:

  • One is kept in the cash drawer at the circulation desk
  • The other is kept in the Academic Room hanging in the back hanging on the whiteboard by the laptops
