NIC Library Manual

The college's procedures for hiring student assistants are available on Sharepoint under Human Resources-Support Staff - NIC Student and Co-op employees: Hiring Manual. This manual includes the current rate of pay, as well as the forms that must be filled out during the hiring process.

Student Assistants

Advertising

The student assistant positions should be advertised on NIC's Career Central. If this is your first time using Career Central you will need to register for an account.

Note: Staff have had difficulty downloading resume's submitted via Career Central, it is best to ask applicants to email you directly rather than allow them to submit through the Career Central website.

The student assistant positions can also be advertised via posters posted around campus, as well as by word of mouth.

Pay Rate

The current payrate is minimum wage plus 4% in lieu of benefits. Please consult the current manual before hiring.

Eligibility 

Applicants must be currently enrolled as full time or part time students, and must be in good standing in order to be eligible for hire. Good standing is defined as having no current notations regarding academic standing, student conduct or outstanding fees. Email the office of the registrar with a list of applicant names to verify that they are eligible for hire.

Interview

Once you have reviewed the resumes and confirmed eligibility, you should interview and check the references of the students you wish to hire.

All new student assistants need to complete the training outlined on the Human Resources-New Employees-First week page:

  • Occupational Health & Safety Orientation

Returning student assistants do not need to repeat this training.

Library Training

Please refer to the Student Assistant libguide (https://library.nic.bc.ca/studentassistant) when training student assistants. the list of approved duties for student assistants (from HR, approved by CUPE): 

Library Student Assistants
The Library Student Assistants provide library support by performing the following tasks:

  • Record gate counts at appropriate times
  • Shelve materials
  • Shelf read and keep shelves neat
  • Charge and Discharge materials
  • Collect fines
  • Pack parcels, attach mailing labels
  • Attach security strips and labels to periodicals
  • Pick up materials left in carrels, on tables and record stats
  • Assist students with simple catalogue searches
  • Replace paper in the photocopier and printer
  • Replace daily sheets for computer use and seminar room
  • Hand out student cards
  • Remove labels etc. from discarded books/periodicals
  • Keep shelves, computer tables and carrels free from clutter
  • Wipe down tabletops, shelves and counter areas
  • Phone students/staff for Interlibrary and Intercampus Loan pickups
  • Pull daily holds from shelves
  • Answer phone, take messages, refer to library staff as needed
  • Photocopying as required
  • Check return bins periodically
  • Remind library patrons about library closing times
  • Help with basic computer questions
  • Solve minor software and hardware problems
  • Troubleshoot printing problems
  • Check sign-up sheet for the computer lab hourly
  • Other support duties as required

Each year in early spring the Coordinator of Library Services will request a student assistant budget for the following fiscal year. the budgeted numbers should be provided in the following divisions:

September-December

January-March

April-May (following fiscal)
