What's New in the 7th Edition?

Notable Changes

1. Only one space is required after a period at the end of a sentence.


2. Student papers do not include a running head unless requested by the instructor or institution


3. If your instructor requests a running head, the running head on the title page no longer includes the words "Running head:":


3. Font style and size are no longer limited to 12-point Times New Roman. Options include 11-point Calibri, 11-point Arial, 10-point Lucida Sans Unicode, 11-point Georgia, and 10-point Computer Modern.

1. For a work with three or more authors, include the name of only the first author plus "et al." in every in-text citation, including the first citation in-text:

3. Reference list entries for webpages have changed in the following ways:

  • Website names are now included in reference list entries 
  • Webpages are italicized
  • Unless a retrieval date is needed (see #4), 'Retrieved from' is no longer required to precede URLs


4. Provide a retrieval date in the reference list entry when citing an unstable work that is likely or meant to change (dictionary entry, social media profile, Google Maps, etc.).

1. A DOI should only be formatted with the prefix


2. When a DOI is long or complex, you may use a shortDOI. Use the shortDOI Service provided by the International DOI Foundation to create shortDOIs.
